As the snow gently fell on New Year’s Day, my family and I stepped onto the Ice Age Trail. The light snowfall gave the trail a quiet, magical feel, and for a little while, it felt like the world had paused, leaving us alone with nature and our thoughts. It was the perfect way to start a new year—not with resolutions or big plans, but with small, steady steps forward.

“And now we welcome the new year, full of things that have never been.”

Rainer Maria Rilke (Letters to a Young Poet)

There’s something about walking a quiet trail at the beginning of a new year that invites reflection. Each step feels like a reminder to slow down and notice the beauty in the moment. The winding path of the trail reminded me that life isn’t about rushing to the next milestone; it’s about being present, trusting the journey, and appreciating the little things along the way. This year, I want to live with that same intentionality—embracing life’s pace and finding joy in its small moments.

As I walked, I couldn’t help but think about the kind of year I want to create. Instead of setting lofty resolutions, I’ve chosen a few meaningful goals that align with the slower, more intentional life I’m striving for:

Here are some of my goals for 2025:

  • One Date a Month with My Husband: Marriage, like any relationship, thrives when we give it time and attention. Setting aside one evening each month to reconnect and enjoy each other’s company feels like a small but important step in nurturing our bond.
  • One Friend Meet-Up Each Month: Friendships are often the first to get sidelined in busy seasons, but they’re so essential for our well-being. This year, I want to make an effort to meet up with friends I don’t see often—even if it’s just for a quick coffee or walk.
  • No-Buy January (and Beyond): January is my starting point for a “no-buy” challenge—a month of resisting unnecessary purchases. It’s a way to reset my habits and focus on appreciating what I already have. I’m hoping this mindset carries forward into the rest of the year.
  • Trying a New Hobby: Life is too short to not explore new interests. I’m giving myself permission to try something new this year—whether it’s baking more from scratch, picking up knitting, or diving into something completely unexpected. I’ve already started gathering inspiration and ideas, and if you’re looking for creative sparks too, you can check out my Pinterest boards here for some of my favorite finds. Who knows? Maybe we’ll discover a new passion together!

The snowy trail on New Year’s Day felt symbolic of the year ahead. It wasn’t perfect, but it was beautiful. The trees stood tall despite the cold, and the snow covered the path, turning the ordinary into something magical. Life will have its messy, unpredictable moments, but it’s in those moments that we grow.

This year, I’m focusing on walking my own path with intention, trusting that every step matters, no matter how small. Whether it’s making time for the people I love, building better habits, or simply pausing to breathe and appreciate the world around me, I want to remember that the beauty is in the journey, not the destination.

As you step into this new year, I hope you’ll join me in slowing down and finding joy in the little things. Whether it’s setting meaningful goals, spending more time with loved ones, or simply taking a quiet walk in nature, there are so many ways to make this year one to cherish.
